Entire Welsh village evacuated as everyone in Bangor on Dee told 4x4s are coming to get them out

Residents in the village of Bangor on Dee have been told to evacuate as the river reaches the highest ever level recorded.

North Wales Police has declared a major incident as emergency services and volunteer flood wardens worked through the night to evacuate residents.

They have been told not to leave on their own but to wait for emergency 4×4 vehicles, which will take them to the local school Ysgol Sant Dunawd.

Natural Resources Wales has issued a severe flood warning for the area. It is the only severe flood warning currently in place in Wales – see the full list of 39 flood warnings and 51 flood alerts here.




Councillor Steven Harvey, chairman of the Bangor on Dee Community Council, said that emergency services had worked through the night.

“We are got a large group of volunteer flood wardens who live in the village and they have magnificent,” he told BBC Radio Wales. “People were advised to leave their properties close to the river during the night.

“There is concern about the possible breach of the flood defences because the river is at an unprecedented level.”

The Dee is the highest ever recorded since a water gauge was installed in 1996.

Councillor Harvey added: “We have got very good system of flood defences which surround the village and they do the job.

“This latest incident has deteriorated as the night has worn on. People are being advised to leave their properties and go to the school where they will be evacuated to the leisure centre.”

In other news, a man was rescued from the roof is his car after it was swept away in raging floodwater.

The motorist was trying to ford a flooded road between Llandegai and Bangor, Gwynedd when his car was swept away.

The car was swept into deeper waters and the became trapped but managed to clamber on to the roof of his car and call the emergency services.

North Wales Police has blasted the actions of some coronavirus rule breakers who travelled to the area while the evacuation operation was ongoing on Wednesday night, saying they were putting people’s lives at risk.
