‘Extreme sadness’ at death of girl, 2, following incident in Haverfordwest

Tributes have been paid to a two-year-old girl who has died in Haverfordwest. The child, who has not been named, passed away on Tuesday.

She was taken to hospital after an incident in the Pembrokeshire town on Friday, and died there four days later.

Police have arrested two people in connection with the death, who have since been released on bail.

Pembrokeshire Council said it was “extremely saddened” by the death of the child, and that Dyfed-Powys Police would now be leading the investigation.

The council also confirmed that its children’s services department was “not involved with the child at the time of the tragic incident”.

Councillors have also expressed their shock at the news, with local county councillor Thomas Tudor, who represents the Haverfordwest Castle ward, speaking of his sadness on Wednesday afternoon.

“It’s a terrible tragedy that has happened,” he said.

“The town is in a state of shock today.”

Dyfed-Powys Police said they were made aware of a gathering at Princess Royal Way in Haverfordwest at around 9pm on Tuesday, July 21, in connection with the child’s death.

A spokeswoman said: “Around 60 people had gathered peacefully to light candles and lay tributes following the tragic death of a two-year-old child.

“Officers attended to ensure there was no community tension.

“Later that night, eight people were spoken to by police following a gathering outside a property in Johnston.

“Officers also spoke to a small group which had gathered outside Haverfordwest Police Station shortly after.

“All gatherings passed without incident.”

Superintendent Ross Evans said: “Pembrokeshire is a close-knit community, and we understand that the death of a child will be a cause for grief.

“However we would appeal to the public to refrain from any actions that could impact the ongoing investigation, including comments shared online and on social media.

“Officers will be more visible in the local area over the coming days as enquiries continue, and any concerns can be addressed through them.”

Confirming the news of the child’s death on Tuesday, a spokesman for Dyfed-Powys Police said: “We are investigating the circumstances that led to the death of a two-year-old child.

“Officers were called to an address in Haverfordwest on the morning of Friday, 17 July, 2020.

“The child has tragically passed away in hospital today. Our thoughts are with the family at this difficult time. The family are supported by specialist trained officers.

“Two people have been arrested on suspicion of assault and neglect, and the investigation is ongoing.

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact police at Pembrokeshire CID by calling online at http://bit.ly/DPPReportOnline, via email at [email protected], or by calling 101.”

The coroner for Pembrokeshire confirmed on Wednesday that an inquest had not yet been opened into the child’s death.
