Scale of assaults on police in Swansea lays bare the risks officers take each day

Police officers in Swansea have been assaulted repeatedly this year while they were just trying to execute their day-to-day duties.

Cases which have passed through the city’s magistrates’ court so far this year shows up the alarming frequency that these offences are being recorded against South Wales Police officers.

Here we’ve taken a look at the instances which have been dealt with through the judicial system and the punishments that each of the people responsible received for their actions.

  • A 51-year-old woman from Swansea assaulted a police officer at Morriston Hospital on May 8. She was jailed for eight weeks and ordered to pay a £128 victim surcharge.
  • A Swansea man assaulted a police officer on January 16 this year. The 46-year-old indicated a plea of guilty and was made subject of a community order. He was fined £120 and ordered to pay a £95 victim surcharge and £85 prosecution costs.
  • A 26-year-old Swansea man assaulted a police officer on February 10. He was made subject of a community order and fined £80 and ordered to pay a £95 victim surcharge and £85 court costs.
  • A 47-year-old woman assaulted a police officer on May 28 in Swansea. She was fined £100 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £34 victim surcharge.
  • On July 3 a 31-year-old Swansea woman assaulted a police officer and after appearing at Swansea Magistrates’ Court was made subject of a community order with an alcohol treatment requirement. She was fined £80 and ordered to pay £100 compensation and a £95 victim surcharge.
  • A 26-year-old woman assaulted a police officer in Swansea on July 5. She was given a 16-week prison sentence and ordered to pay a £128 victim surcharge.
  • A police officer was assaulted by a 23-year-old Swansea man on March 20. He was made subject of a community order with 200 hours unpaid work and ordered to pay £100 compensation plus a £95 victim surcharge and £85 court costs.
  • A female police officer was assaulted at Swansea Central Police Station by a 34-year-old Swansea man on April 24. He was given a 16-week prison sentence and ordered to pay £50 compensation.

  • A 44-year-old man assaulted a police sergeant at Swansea central police station on March 31. He was sent to prison for three months and ordered to pay £50 compensation and £128 victim surcharge.
  • A 36-year-old from Swansea assaulted a police constable on February 19. A community order was made with a rehabilitation activity requirement. He was also ordered to pay £50 compensation, a £95 victim surcharge, and £85 court costs.
  • A police officer was assaulted in Swansea on April 16. The 30-year-old who committed the act was sent to prison for 12 weeks and ordered to pay a £128 victim surcharge.
